MARITAL
BLITZ
What happened when the bride and groom
never showed up for their wedding?
It went off without a hitch.
Ha ha ha! Whew.
However, my brother Jason and his fiancee Lori
DID show up for their wedding, which is good, considering that our respective
families were both there as well, with many members having made long journeys
from out of state, and thus a savage, savage beating would have resulted
had the event been called off. My grandfather, a pastor, performed the ceremony,
and you could definitely sense a hard edge to his voice when he asked any
objectors to speak up or forever hold their peace.
So, that went well. My brother's married, and
I now have a sister-in-law. After the wedding, both the Scott and Gibson
families went to dinner at a local Italian restaurant, Fazio's. Our sister
was in town with her baby, Ryan, and both were present at the dinner, leading
to a moment that involved Lori's mother picking up the ever-adorable Ryan,
playing with him for a bit, smiling broadly, then turning her gaze down the
table to Lori and Jason, giving them a look that said, plainly, "You
better get crackin'."
So we'll see how that turns out.
The day after the wedding was the reception.
It was held in the banquet hall at the Charleston Women's Association, though
none of the men were violently ejected or burst into flame upon entering,
so they clearly show some elasticity in their rules, at least during party
rentals.
Our friend J.T. D.J.'ed the affair, and though
we expressed some nervousness about his track selections in a family setting
-- with some precedent; two Halloweens ago, we were helping decorate and
hand out candy at his house when his specially-crafted horror-movie-soundtrack
mix CD suddenly jumped to a song from the "South Park" movie that is so obscene
that I am unable to reference its title here -- he actually did a fantastic
job, with the only questionable song being a lounge version of Sir Mix-A-Lot's
"Big Butts" magnum opus, which my parents were either too polite, or too
embarassed, to point out.
Yesterday -- monday -- we had dinner one last
time at our parents' house with our sister and little Ryan, before they returned
to South Carolina. They're actually on the road as I write this, so, here's
hoping that goes smoothly.
As for now, things are settling down. Jason's
back at work for a week before he and Lori head off to Disney World for their
honeymoon. Me, I'm hunkering back into the cartoonin' seat, and I hope I
do not come off as slighting the joyous events of one's lifetime when I note
that I'm glad to be returning to some semblance of normalcy. I'm only wired
to deal well with about one good-sized event, biweekly, before my nerves
start fraying.
So, here's to the status quo, readers! I'm
back, and back aint bad.
