WORK
GOOD?
And that takes care of tuesday, too! weekdays
just got no stayin' power. Three to go!
Work is a funny thing, when you get down to
it. You take it too lightly, you deteriorate. You take it too seriously,
you deteriorate. You strike a perfect balance between life and work, and
you deteriorate a bit slower. As the old-timers say, it's not whether you
win or lose, because you're inevitably gonna lose. You really only have the
choice of what sort of expression you're wearing as the ship goes down. Real
inspirational, you dumb old-timers.
I aint trying to be cynical, here -- worldview-wise,
I'm hardly Nietzsche. It's just an observation of fact. Scramble all you
want, build your towers and your statues, enslave the populace and have your
way with their women, but in the end, you're still sharing real-estate with
creepy-crawlies.
Okay, maybe it's a little cynical, but it's
past midnight and I'm not sure where I'm going with this. It's not to rally
everybody to throw in the towel and hide under rocks wearing sackcloth and
smears of ash, nor is it to necessarily go the route of quitting one's job
and live a carefree vagabond existence. It's more a call towards examining
one's occupation, and determining whether it's actually helping things, in
the grand scheme.
So says the cartoonist. I don't know, I'd like
to think that the comics industry holds some practical societal benefits
in the areas of, you know, morale, that sort of thing... But, then, how many
cartoons do you need to keep the populace going? Not that many, I'm betting,
even when you account for the demoralizing effects of such longtime comics-page
staples as "Family Circus" and "Cathy."
Hmm.
