Idiocracy
I hadn't really planned on it, but I watched
Mike Judge's "Idiocracy" tonight. I'd heard of it before, under the working
title of "3001," and figured -- naturally, after the DVD success of "Office
Space," -- that it'd be coming to a theater near me in due course.
Imagine my surprise when my friend Big J (not
his Christian name) brought over the DVD, this evening. "Huh," is what I
said, but I was actually more surprised than that, 'cause, you know, "Office
Space," right? Guaranteed box office returns.
But, no, it's really on DVD right now, after
an extremely limited theatrical release of only about 150 screens nationally,
meaning that its theatrical audience might actually have been even LOWER
than "Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie." Apparently Fox buried it
-- HARD. They didn't even release a media kit or trailers, and it seems to
have involved some sort of vendetta against the film itself for the starkly
unflattering manner in which actual major corporations are portrayed. This
being a family blog, I am not at liberty to cite examples.
The movie itself, while not quite on level
with "Office Space," is pretty darned hilarious if not particularly subtle.
It has the makings of a cult classic, though, and is plenty quotable, and
certainly deserved a heck of a lot better than it got. Not for the
easily-offended. Check it out.
